Development of a simple, catchment-scale, rainfall- evapotranspiration-runoff model

چکیده
Representation of the hydrological interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere requires considerable improvement, particularly for predicting evapotranspiration feedbacks for use in models of the general circulation (GCMs) of the atmosphere. The predictive model developed here attempts to use a water balance approach that extracts information from the masses of catchment-scale time series data available on precipitation, energy-related variables and stream discharge. It begins with a few simple assumptions in order to seek some synthesis of the climate and landscape controls on evapotranspiration and soil moisture feedbacks, and catchment water yields. The model adopts the hydrograph identification approach used in the linear module of the rainfallrunoff model IHACRES but replaces the previous statistically based non-linear evapotranspiration loss module by a catchment moisture deficit accounting scheme. One advantage of this more conceptual approach is that evapotranspiration can be output on the same time step at which precipitation and energy variables are available (such as from GCMs), and this time step can be shorter (e.g. half hourly) than the discharge time step (e.g. daily) used to calibrate the model parameters. 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Effects of rainfall seasonality and soil moisture capacity on mean annual water balance for Australian catchments
[1] An important factor controlling catchment-scale water balance is the seasonal variation of climate. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the seasonal distributions of water and energy, and their interactions with the soil moisture store, on mean annual water balance in Australia at catchment scales using a stochastic model of soil moisture balance with seasonally varying fo...

Parameterization of physically based and distributed hydrological models for mesoscale catchments remains challenging because the commonly available data base is insufficient for calibration. In this paper, we parameterize a mesoscale catchment for the distributed model HydroGeoSphere by transferring evapotranspiration parameters calibrated at a highly-equipped headwater catchment in addition t...
متن کاملWater Balance Modelling Over Variable Time Scales
Partitioning of rainfall into evapotranspiration and runoff is controlled by climate and catchment characteristics. The degree of control exerted by these factors varies with the spatial and temporal scales of processes being modelled. Understanding individual hydrological processes and their relationships with climatic and catchment characteristics is an important step in predicting catchment ...

Hydrological models are the simplified, conceptual and mathematical description of rainfall, runoff, oceans, rivers, groundwater, snow etc. Rainfall-runoff modeling in the broader sense a hydrological, mathematical model gives a detailed account of Rainfall-Runoff relationships of a catchment area or watershed. Conversion of rainfall into runoff takes place in the modelling. There are many meth...
متن کاملAssessing Rainfall-Runoff Records for Time Invariance using Transfer Function Models with Time-varying Parameters
Most catchment-scale rainfall-runoff models represent as time -invariant such features of the hydrograph as lag to peak, volumetric throughput and recession time constant. While this assumption has been shown to suit many catchment-modelling purposes, it obscures any variation in response characteristics over the range of conditions in which the model is calibrated. The assumption of time invar...
